Two Flemington options for Cauthen

Monday 2 September 2013, 3:17pm

The Group Two Danehill Stakes on Saturday has emerged as a possibility for boom New Zealand colt Cauthen.

Cauthen, second favourite for the Caulfield Guineas, is nominated for the Danehill (1200m) and the Listed Henry Bucks Stakes (1400m) at Flemington and trainer Andrew Campbell said a decision would be made after he looked at the entries.

The Listed race was the original plan after the colt won at Moonee Valley last start but the Group Two race would be an attractive option.

"We'll wait and look over the nominations," Campbell said.

"I've spoken to the owner and the pressure is off us a bit now. We've hopefully qualified for the Caulfield Guineas.

"We'll just have a look at the nominations and maybe make a call tonight."

Cauthen was a luckless second on his Australian debut at Moonee Valley last month before scoring an impressive win at the same track in the McKenzie Stakes last time out.

Campbell is looking forward to getting the colt to Flemington regardless of which race he runs in.

"He's crying out for the bigger tracks," Campbell said.

"James (McDonald) even said he was struggling getting around the corner a couple of times at Moonee Valley. I can't wait to see him on a roomier track."

The trainer said Cauthen had come through his latest win in good order and had tightened up again heading towards the Caulfield Guineas.

"He's looking really well," he said.

Cauthen was joint-favourite for the Caulfield Guineas after his Valley win but Prince Harada has regained his position at the head of betting after a luckless second to another Guineas-bound colt Fast 'N' Rocking in the McNeil Stakes last Saturday.

Campbell was impressed with both Prince Harada and Fast 'N' Rocking, two likely Guineas rivals for Cauthen.

"I was real impressed with both runs," Campbell said.

"It's not going to be a walk in the park. They look top quality."
