A two-state weight-for-age double for Chris Waller on Saturday has stamped the trainer's mark on the spring carnival with the promise of more to come.
An hour after Foreteller upset the long-time Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune in the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington, Hawkspur handed his rivals a lesson in the Group Two Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick.
Both races were over 1600 metres, and both winners were just getting starts with Waller dreaming of Cox Plates and Cups.
Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur ($5.50) was driven through the pack by Jim Cassidy to take the lead inside the 200m, overhauling his stablemate Beaten Up ($4.40) and drawing away to win by 3-1/4 lengths.
Lightinthenite ($13) was a short neck third with the Waller-trained Moriarty fourth.
Favourite Veyron ($2.90) was slow out of the gates and made some ground before striking interference and finishing ninth.
All honours were with the winner who emerged as a future star with three wins in the Queensland winter and came into the Chelmsford off a first-up midfield finish in the Warwick Stakes won by Veyron.
"It was an emphatic win," Waller said.
"Jimmy (Cassidy) has been bullish about him all along. He said not to worry that it was Queensland form. He said it was good form.
"He told me to just think about the Melbourne Cup and work back from there to work out his program.
"We know he will stay but we are trying not to get too far ahead of ourselves."
Hawkspur was immediately elevated to $10 second favouritism for the Caulfield Cup behind Super Cool at $9 and was also lifted to second elect for the Melbourne Cup at $12 with Puissance De Lune holding the top spot at $5.
The size of Waller's stable makes it hard for him to separate his horses but he will begin to split the major players between Sydney and Melbourne's features over the next few weeks.
The Group One Underwood Stakes at Caulfield is an option for Hawkspur and Foreteller while Moriarty and Kelinni, who ran midfield in the Chelmsford, could head to the Metropolitan in Sydney.
"Beaten Up might get to the Cox Plate," Waller said.
"He and Hawkspur have the X-factor."
Waller gave Cassidy a 10 out of 10 for his ride and the champion jockey has no doubts where Hawkspur is headed.
"All he needs is a bit better ride on the first Tuesday in November," he said.
