Lady Melksham looks to revive spring hopes

Thursday 12 September 2013, 3:53pm

Stakes winner Lady Melksham will be out to get her spring campaign back on track at Moonee Valley on Saturday after an interrupted start.

The five-year-old has not raced since her fifth in the Cockram Stakes on August 17, a Group Three race she won last year.

Since then she has been withdrawn from two races - the Hocking Handicap because of a wide barrier draw and last week's Group Two Let's Elope Stakes following an injury scare.

Trainer John Sadler said the mare was in great shape but admitted she would have to be at her best to win the Listed Drummond Golf Stakes (1200m).

The race has attracted a classy field including multiple Group One winner Yosei, smart sprinter Neeson and comeback galloper Rekindled Interest who has not raced since last year's Cox Plate.

Last start winner Elite Elle is favourite at $4.60 with Lady Melksham next in betting at $7.

"She will certainly have to run at her best to win a race like this but I think she is in good order," Sadler said.

Lady Melksham will have Glen Boss on board and the champion jockey is familiar with his mount having ridden her in her last six races.

"He really likes her and knows what she is capable of," Sadler said.

Sadler said that if the predicted rain fell on Friday it would boost the chances of Lady Melksham.

"It would definitely be to her advantage," he said.

If Lady Melksham can win on Saturday, Sadler will consider a start in the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400 metres at Caulfield on September 29.
