Ballarat abandoned due to state of track

Thursday 12 September 2013, 4:09pm

Concerns over jockey safety have resulted in Thursday's Ballarat meeting being abandoned after three races.

Riders raised issues with the track after several horses slipped on the surface in the opening events and subsequent attempts to aerate affected sections of the turf were unsuccessful.

Chris Symons was aboard a horse which slipped after the winning post in the third race and he said the majority of riders weren't comfortable to continue with the meeting.

"We had a vote and all the jockeys got together and 85 per cent to 90 per cent said that they weren't comfortable riding on the track," Symons told TVN.

He cited a firm surface with moisture on top as the issue.

Racing Victoria steward Corey Waller chaired the meeting and confirmed attempts to aerate the track around the home turn and after the winning post failed to satisfy the riders' safety concerns.
