Waller cautious over Kingston Town chances

Friday 13 September 2013, 3:30pm

Chris Waller's dominance of Sydney middle distance and staying races will be put to the test in the Kingston Town Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

Typically, Waller has numbers on his side as he tries for a third win in the Group Three event.

He will run I'm Imposing, Lunayir and Lucripetous but the premier trainer has reservations about their prospects in a race where Caulfield Cup possibility Prince Cheri holds favouritism.

I'm Imposing ($9.50) is given the best chance of the trio after he made late ground against the pattern of the day at Rosehill a fortnight ago.

But Waller concedes the Kingston Town isn't the ideal progression race for the veteran.

"He's sort of taking two steps - up in distance and up in grade - but there was a lot to like about his last start," Waller said.

Lucripetous is dropping back in distance on two recent wins and tempo will be crucial to a horse which has Waller thinking long term.

"I'm killing time with him because he's Sydney Cup bound," Waller said.

"If he goes out for a spell now he goes out too early so he is going to start in the Colin Stephen to try to get his rating up a bit higher and then we'll pull up stumps."

Lucripetous has responded to a change of training to post distance wins at Randwick and Warwick Farm last month.

"I've been training him like a miler and it's worked," Waller said.

Lunayir will have to run well to avoid a veterinary surgeon's appointment.

"He didn't want to take part last start," Waller said.

"I don't know what to expect from him and he might be a gelding contender at some stage in the future."

The Premier's Cup is the lead-in form race to the Kingston Town Stakes but the winner Less Is More is a $7.50 second betting pick behind his stablemate Prince Cheri ($3.50).
