An unbeaten record over the McEwan Stakes course isn't enough to have trainer Jason Warren expecting an upset with Freereturn at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
But Warren is happy to give the sprinter his chance against Group One winners Moment Of Change and Platelet in the 1000m weight-for-age race.
Warren expects Freereturn to run a big race but doubts he has the class to topple Moment Of Change and Platelet in the Group Two event.
Freereturn has won four of his six starts at Moonee Valley, including both his runs over 1000m, but his biggest success during his career has been at Listed level at Caulfield.
"Moment Of Change and Platelet have accepted so it looks to me like we'll be running for third," Warren said.
"Our horse is really well though and will run terrific first-up, he loves the Valley."
Warren's stable star Bel Sprinter won the McEwen Stakes last year.
Freereturn finished third in the Listed 1200m event on the corresponding program and Warren said he had targeted this meeting.
He said Freereturn had trialled nicely at Cranbourne and would appreciate any rain.
Freereturn won a 1000m event on Cox Plate day last year and could head down the same path, although a big first-up run could also have Warren raising his sights.
"He's already won 10 races, he's done enough, so from here on in anything is a bonus," Warren said.
Nash Rawiller, in Melbourne to ride Fiorente in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes, has the mount on Freereturn.
Moment Of Change, winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes last spring and runner-up in the Lightning Stakes and Newmarket Handicap earlier this year, is a $2.10 favourite to make a winning return.
