Waterhouse stars with Valley, Sydney haul

Saturday 14 September 2013, 6:02pm

Gai Waterhouse didn't come away with the winner's cheque in the $1 million Golden Rose in Sydney but she did claim her share of the spoils across the country on Saturday.

The Randwick trainer had a perfect strikerate from three starters at Moonee Valley, a winner with her only runner at Kembla Grange and was also in form at Rosehill where she collected two wins and produced Bull Point for a top-three finish in the Group One Golden Rose.

"I can't complain," Waterhouse said.

The win by Fiorente was the stable's highlight.

The Melbourne Cup runner-up drifted wide around the home turn but unleashed a devastating turn of foot to mow down leader and Valley specialist Spacecraft by a long head to win the Group Two Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes.

His victory also justified Nash Rawiller's decision to bypass the lucrative Golden Rose meeting in Sydney to stick with Fiorente.

"He's very exciting. It was an absolutely mind-boggling win," Waterhouse said.

Waterhouse won support races at the Valley with The Great Snowman and Divine Calling who gave Damien Oliver a perfect return gift at his first city meeting since his return from a 10-month ban for betting.

Rosehill was also a happy hunting ground for the top trainer.

Ecuador underlined his promise to take out the McGrath Estate Agents Handicap (1800m) before Driefontein raced away with the Group Three Sheraco Stakes for the fillies and mares.

But the run of the day in Sydney came from expensive colt Bull Point who tailed the field by at least six lengths midway through the Golden Rose and charged home to grab third behind Zoustar and Dissident.

The one sore spot for Waterhouse was the scratching of Aussies Love Sport from the Group One event on race eve.

The colt passed a preliminary vet test on Friday and was cleared to run, however, a conversation between his owners and chief steward Ray Murrihy later that night led to his withdrawal.

Murrihy spoke to Waterhouse about the matter in the stewards' room at Rosehill but the discussion was closed to the media.

He later said the scratching did not relate to Aussies Love Sport's fitness while Waterhouse directed queries to owners Segenhoe Stud.

"You've got to ask (Segenhoe's) Bill Mitchell," she said.

Murrihy said the matter had been finalised.
