Hay List ready for his next test

Monday 16 September 2013, 5:05pm

Star sprinter Hay List heads to the Group Two Shorts at Randwick in somewhat better condition than his trainer who is nursing a sore head after a trackwork fall on Monday morning.

John McNair said the injury-prone gelding was fit and well ahead of Saturday's race but he was feeling the worse for wear.

"I came off a horse this morning and landed on my head," McNair said.

"I usually land better than that.

"But Hay List is good. He's leading me around."

The triple Group One winner heads the 15 entries taken on Monday for the 1100m dash with a rating of 115, eight points clear of Manawanui, the Golden Rose winner of two years ago.

Hay List made a respectable and encouraging return to racing when fifth in the Concorde Stakes (1000m) won by Decision Time who is again among his opponents.

Like Hay List, six-year-old Decision Time has had his share of problems after shining in his first season with wins at his first four starts including the Black Opal Stakes and a second to Crystal Lily in the 2010 Golden Slipper.

But his trainer Clarry Conners says the gelding is as sound as he has been for a long time.

"This is a bit harder race than last time but he's done super since the Concorde," Conners said.

"He had a very long spell and took a long time to get fit but I couldn't be happier with how he is now and Blake Shinn rides him again."

McNair may call on Glyn Schofield to give his assessment of Hay List in a gallop on Wednesday morning.

Schofield is riding at Newcastle that day and the trainer said he would ask him to stop in at his Central Coast property on the way from Sydney if he thought Hay List needed a strong hit-out.
