Wood looking for Sizzling day at Randwick

Thursday 19 September 2013, 4:47pm

The Sydney spring carnival got off to a disappointing start for Kelso Wood but he has the horsepower to turn his fortunes around at Randwick on Saturday.

The Queensland-based trainer had three runners at Rosehill last weekend and all raced below their best.

Into The Red led the Golden Rose field but compounded to finish last, Someday beat one runner home in the Sebring Sprint while Grey Assignment was midfield in the Kingston Town Stakes."

"I had five down there but I brought three horses home on Monday and they've gone to the paddock," Wood said.

"It was a bit of a disappointing day last Saturday, so I'm just hoping we can rise up and shine this Saturday."

Wood is pinning his hopes on Group One winner Sizzling and stakes performer Belltone who clash again in the Group Three Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m).

Sizzling came from near-last to finish fifth to Malavio in the Tramway Stakes which was dominated by the on-pace runners.

Wood expects him to give Saturday's race a shake but his mission is the Epsom Handicap on October 5.

A Group One-winning juvenile over 1600m, Sizzling has been restricted to sprint races at his past two preparations.

However, his trainer has no doubt the four-year-old will handle the tough mile of the Epsom at Randwick, if not further.

"I think he's looking for a mile, a mile or even 10 furlongs," he said.

Belltone finished ninth in the Tramway, beaten 2-1/2 lengths, and Wood also has Epsom aspirations for him.

"His runs have been very good and I expect him to be competitive."
