His trainer and jockey freely admit Photon Willie is a headcase but such is the horse's raw talent they prefer to consider him a work in progress.
The four-year-old took his record to four wins from 10 starts when he overwhelmed the leaders to take out the Vale Keith Robbins Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Trainer Chris Waller has no big plans for him this campaign but he won't be surprised to see him develop into a high-class galloper in the future.
"He's a fierce horse with a lot of ability which we're gradually harnessing," Waller said.
"It's easy to be upbeat after you've had a winner but in a pressure race with the speed on, it might bring the best out of him."
Photon Willie's bad manners have cost him a victory or two in the past but punters didn't hesitate to put their faith in him on Saturday.
Crunched from $4.40 to start a $3.40 favourite, he scored by a neck over Sainthood ($12) with Punch Your Weight ($17) just pipping Gangster's Choice to nab third.
Winning jockey Glyn Schofield echoed Waller's sentiments that Photon Willie had a bright future, if he could iron out his quirks.
"He's a serious horse," Schofield said.
"He's doing it half-cocked at the moment. He's not concentrating.
"He's got untapped potential."
The disappointment of the race was Hippopus who was well supported but weakened to finished seventh after leading.
