Boban stakes Epsom claim with Randwick win

Saturday 21 September 2013, 4:46pm

The up-and-coming Boban has added his name to Chris Waller's list of Epsom Handicap runners after trouncing his rivals in Saturday's Group Three Bill Ritchie Handicap at Randwick.

The four-year-old was brilliant, idling up on the inside of the leaders in the straight before bursting clear for a 3-3/4 length victory over Belltone with Choice Bro another half-head away.

The performance prompted TAB fixed odds to roll him into equal favourite for the Epsom at $6, alongside Wednesday's Cameron Handicap winner Toydini.

Previously trained by Anthony Freedman in Melbourne, Boban joined Waller earlier this year and while his first campaign for his new trainer was sound he appears to have come of age.

"He has just matured. It's as simple as that. And he's getting confidence and relaxing," Waller said.

"He is coming together at the right time. Both runs back from a spell he has been very impressive to say the least.

"The beauty of the Epsom is he will get in with a light weight."

Boban has 52kg in the Epsom and will be one of up to four runners for Waller.

Sydney's premier trainer will also start Sebring Sprint winner Riva De Lago and Doncaster Mile hero Sacred Falls while Shoot Out is a possible runner depending on how he pulls up from his George Main Stakes effort.

Winning rider Glyn Schofield, who combined with Waller to win the opening race of the day on Photon Willie, said Boban's acceleration would make him an ideal Epsom horse.

"If he gets a really good tempo, with the turn of foot he's got, you never know," Schofield said.
