Epaulette to work at Valley before Moir

Sunday 22 September 2013, 4:00pm

Dual Group One winner Epaulette will get his first look at Moonee Valley on Monday as he rounds out preparations for his first-up mission in the Moir Stakes.

The Peter Snowden-trained Epaulette is primed for Friday night's Group One Moir (1200m) at Moonee Valley and is one of 26 horses scheduled to work at the track on Monday.

Fellow Group One winners Bel Sprinter and Samaready, who are also headed to the Moir, are also having an early-morning gallop at the Valley while Cox Plate contender Fiorente gets another look around the circuit after winning the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes there last Saturday week.

The Snowden-trained three-year-old San Diego runs in Friday's Group Two Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) and is also among the horses working at Monday's trackwork session.

Paul Snowden, stable foreman in Melbourne for the Darley team, said an excursion to the Valley would help Epaulette's preparation.

"He's a bull and he likes doing things differently," Snowden said.

"It just seems to work in well with where he's at and what he needs.

"He's had a lot of work under his belt so it's not about going there for a hard gallop.

"It's just something different for him."

Snowden said Epaulette, winner of the Doomben 10,000 and Golden Rose last season, had been in Melbourne for a couple of weeks and would be ready to run a big race on Friday.

"He's very forward. It's a Group One. We're not going into it hoping we're going to improve - he's got to be ready," he said.

"It's going to be a good field and he needs to be ready to go."

San Diego, a winner over 1600m as a two-year-old, ran an eye-catching first-up race in the Listed Henry Bucks Stakes (1400m) to finish third behind stablemate Long John.

The Victoria Derby is likely to be his main spring aim.

"Obviously a mile second-up (on Friday) is going to suit. There's no worries about that," Snowden said.

Darley's Caulfield Guineas favourite Long John, runs in next Sunday's Group Two Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m), a race Epaulette won a year ago.
