Bel Sprinter will be fitted with a barrier blanket in Friday night's Group One Moir Stakes to help curb his slow starts.
Trainer Jason Warren is not convinced the barrier blanket is the solution but is willing to try it out after experimenting with it in a recent trial at Cranbourne.
The gelding is unbeaten in five first-up attempts and has a record of two wins from three starts at Moonee Valley which is the venue for the Moir (1200m).
Bel Sprinter was slowly away first-up last campaign in The Galaxy (1100m) in Sydney but finished powerfully to win the Group One sprint.
Warren took Bel Sprinter to Moonee Valley on Monday morning for a solo gallop ahead of the Moir with race jockey Damien Oliver aboard.
Oliver is chasing his first Group One win since his recent return from a 10-month ban for a betting offence.
"We're going to try the barrier blanket on him on Friday night. Whether that helps or hinders him we'll soon see," Warren said.
He said Bel Sprinter had been fine in trials and at home but it was only on race days, or nights, when he has had problems.
The trainer hopes the blanket keeps Bel Sprinter more relaxed in the gates, but he said Bel Sprinter wasn't a nervous horse in the barriers.
"Barrier blankets are best on horses that are very nervous in the barriers. He's not one of those horses," Warren said.
"He doesn't get all nervous in there, he's just a bit lazy out you might say. We haven't used the barrier blanket (before) for that reason.
"He's not scared in there and he probably only missed the start in the Galaxy because a horse (Unpretentious) went off and he thought it was start time.
"It's something I don't think will fix him, but it's worth a try."
World renowned "horse whisperer" Monty Roberts is attributed with introducing the blanket which has a calming effect on horses, simulating being rugged up for the night.
It is attached to the barriers and remains behind when the horse jumps away.
Black Caviar had a barrier blanket during most of her career.
The Moir Stakes has attracted 12 nominations including Epaulette, Moment Of Change, Buffering, Samaready, Snitzerland and Stradbroke winner Linton.
