Group One winner Commanding Jewel could still play a part in the spring carnival with trainer Leon Corstens hopeful she can make a quick recovery from a hamstring problem.

Corstens was a little more upbeat on Tuesday, 24 hours after he noticed the mare had a problem, with scans showing she had "tweaked" a hamstring, probably during trackwork.

The winner of the 2012 Thousand Guineas, Commanding Jewel is a three-quarter sister to Atlantic Jewel who lost her unbeaten record, but not her admirers, in Saturday's Underwood Stakes won by It's A Dundeel.

Corstens hopes the four-year-old mare can be ready in time for the Group One Toorak Handicap on October 12.

Commanding Jewel was to start in the Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield on Sunday after winning the Group Two Let's Elope Stakes second-up after almost a year off due to a joint injury.

"I'm hopeful we can get the horse to the Toorak, but you just don't know," Corstens said.

"It's sad, but what can you do. I feel sorry for her owners.

"With these muscle things you just have to let the horse tell you how they are and we'll wait and see."
