Two Australian victories in midweek company has laid the platform for improving stayer Surpass to chase a first stakes win at Mornington on Saturday.
Surpass has finished strongly in both starts since joining Mike Moroney's stable, winning by good margins in races at Sandown and Mornington.
The former New Zealander returns to Mornington for Saturday's Listed R M Ansett Classic (2415m) with Moroney confident the five-year-old only has to replicate his recent form to be hard to beat.
Moroney took Surpass to Mornington last start with Saturday's race in mind.
Surpass scored by more than five lengths over 2100m at Sandown late last month in his first Australian start before sprinting clear in the straight for a 2-1/4 length success over 2000m at Mornington on September 11.
"He's been impressive and shown a good turn of foot both times to win," Moroney said.
"It was start 13 of the campaign the other day, he came over here after having 11 starts and we were questioning how long he could go on with it for.
"He's not showing any signs on the track that he's changed but when you get to that part of your campaign it's always a bit of a question mark.
"If he throws in a bad one we'll turn him out."
Surpass isn't nominated for the major Cups and Moroney said the Bendigo Cup could be an option for Surpass should he win again on Saturday.
Apprentice Jordan Childs has ridden Surpass to his two Victorian wins but senior rider Nick Hall takes over on Saturday with Surpass drawing barrier three in the field of 13.
Imported stayer Brigantin has 60kg with the rest of the field on the limit of 54kg.
"If he's in the same form as his last two wins I would think he'd be pretty hard to beat," Moroney said.
