Appearance looking good for Golden Pendant

Wednesday 25 September 2013, 6:05pm

Guy Walter is confident class mare Appearance can turn around an indifferent first-up performance and add to his spring carnival bounty.

The trainer has been in glowing form over the past week winning Newcastle's Cameron Handicap with Toydini and Saturday's Group One George Main Stakes with Streama.

Appearance will be out to add to his feature-race haul when she steps out in the Group Three Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

A three-time Group One winner last season, Appearance resumed with a ninth to Driefontein in the Sheraco Stakes (1200m) on September 14, the first time she had finished outside the top three at a first-up run.

Walter expected better but said she did have excuses.

"It was only fair but she did get back in a race where they ran home a quick last 600 (metres) and it was hard to make ground," Walter said.

"I'm prepared to forgive her.

"I'm confident that when she gets to her right distance she will be competitive."

Walter reported Streama came through her George Main win in good order and confirmed Hugh Bowman would ride her in the Epsom with Blake Shinn committed to Toydini.

The Warwick Farm trainer also has high hopes for progressive mare Gamba who took her record to five wins from six starts in the Canterbury Park Handicap (1200m) on Wednesday.

The Listed G H Mumm Stakes at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup carnival is in the mix for the lightly raced five-year-old, although nothing has been locked in.

"There is an 1100-metre mares' race on Oaks day for one," Walter said.

"Balmont ran second in it a couple of years ago. She ran into Ortensia that day so you wouldn't want to be doing something like that."
