The training duo of Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra are taking their time with smart filly Solicit with her spring campaign a race-by-race proposition.
The three-year-old will take on her peers in the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday but it could be her last race this preparation if the trainers are not happy with how she pulls up.
Zahra says Solicit, who has won two of her only three races - including a win over 1200m at Moonee Valley last start - is not a seasoned filly you can do a lot with at the moment.
"We've kept her on the fresher side and we're trying to space her runs," Zahra said.
"We're trying to season her by getting a few runs under her belt - it's a good opportunity to get some black type."
Solicit, a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Star of Giselle, has been nominated for the $1 million VRC Oaks (2500m) on November 7 but whether she runs or not depends on how she recovers from her first run over the mile.
"Each run could be her last this preparation and if she can make it to the Oaks, then so be it," Zahra said.
"She takes a while to get over her runs so if she doesn't round up after Saturday she could end up in the paddock."
The Ellerton-Zahra team also has Epic Saga running in the UCI Stakes (1800m) and Menage A Charge in the Cap D'Antibes Stakes (1000m) on Saturday.
Zahra described Epic Saga, beaten by a half neck in his last outing at Caulfield on September 21, as a progressive horse heading towards the $1.5 million Victoria Derby on November 2.
He said Menage A Charge had drawn wide at barrier 11 which will suit her style of racing.
"The wide barrier will suit her down the Flemington straight because she doesn't like being in amongst it," Zahra said.
