Queensland mare Fire Up Fifi has earned a crack at the Group One Myer Classic with victory in Saturday's Blazer Stakes at Flemington.
The Robert Heathcote-trained Fire Up Fifi ($21) got the better of favourite Peron ($3) over the concluding stages in the Group Two event for mares over 1410m, winning by a neck with last-start Group winner Catkins ($6) another three-quarters of a length away.
Last weekend Heathcote had to settle for Group One placings with Buffering and Solzhenitsyn but Fire Up Fifi provided a better result in the mare's first Melbourne start.
"It was a big step up in class for her but Rob brought her down thinking she would be competitive and today's she has proven that," stable representative Melissa Leitch said.
"So we'll go on to the Myer Classic which is our ultimate goal."
Fire Up Fifi will have her next start in the Tristarc Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield ahead of the Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington in four weeks.
