Christian Reith thought he'd won, the punters though he hadn't, and it took the judge several minutes to decide Best Case had scored by the narrowest of margins.
A decision on the deceptive photo finish between Best Case and Kirramosa took so long that the stewards even went upstairs to check on the judge's verdict.
The ruling eventually went the way of Best Case with the three-year-old getting the nod over Jason Collett's mount Kirramosa in the City Tattersalls Club Inglis Bonus Hcp (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Collett got something back when Index Linked claimed the Reith-ridden Leebaz in another tight finish to the Bartier Perry (1600m), one which didn't take nearly as long to determine.
"It's one-all but it should be two-nil," Collett said.
Collett took little reassurance from chief steward Ray Murrihy that the Best Case-Kirramosa finish was too close to call and his panel was happy to go with the judge's opinion there was a margin - or not.
"If it had been a dead heat, we wouldn't have changed it," Murrihy said.
Trainer Anthony Cummings' son and stable spokesman, Edward, was one who believed Best Case had crossed the line first.
"I'm confident in the horse, he's gutsy," Cummings said.
"It looked like he might have just come into the end of his run there in the last 25 metres."
Christian Reith said he felt Best Case change into top gear and stretch out hard approaching the finish.
"I thought it was on the line, but to my horse's credit he stuck his head out where it mattered."
Punters took the view Kirramosa's defeat was as good as a win with the John Sargent-trained filly firming from $31 to $13 for next month's VRC Oaks.
