Jockey Damian Browne continued his sparkling form with a clever ride to land a betting plunge on Pretty Gully at Doomben on Wednesday.
Browne, who will ride Queensland star Buffering in the Group One Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night, has been one of the form jockeys of the Melbourne spring carnival.
The Sunshine Coast-based based Browne has ridden feature winners at the first three weekends of the carnival - Fire Up Fifi (Blazer Stakes), Missy Longstocking (Thoroughbred Club Stakes) and Liesele (Alinghi Stakes).
The Orminston College Handicap (1200m) at Doomben on Wednesday was a long way from the Melbourne spring but Browne showed the same quick thinking to steer Pretty Gully home.
Pretty Gully was backed from $8 to $5 and as much as $12 was reportedly bet by some off-course bookmakers.
The mare missed the start slightly and was trapped three deep but Browne took his mount to the lead and stacked up the field.
Pretty Gully then sprinted home to easily beat Skating Away ($3.40) by 2-1/4 lengths with 1-1/4 lengths to Military Bride ($17) in third place.
"We had to spend a bit of petrol to lead but once there we got some easy sectionals," Browne said.
Trainer Stuart Kendrick has a big opinion of Pretty Gully who was originally trained by Peter Moody.
"We bought her before her previous campaign and she won a couple of races for us," Kendrick said.
"But she was immature and I knew if we gave her some more time we would have a pretty good mare."
Kendrick, who moved from Mackay to the Sunshine Coast last year, has gradually built up his team to 30 horses.
"I am enjoying it here and one thing I don't miss is the travelling," he said.
Meanwhile, trainer Kelly Schweida was far from downhearted when his promising galloper Rock Scent ($1.70) was beaten into second place in the Sequalo Lyndhurst Maiden (1615m).
Schweida is still hopeful Rock Scent can develop into a Queensland Derby horse.
"He'll go for a spell now. Rock Scent is still very green but he will come back a much better horse," Schweida said.
