Gamblin' Guru has scored an all-the-way win in the Listed Geelong Classic on Wednesday but trainer Leon Macdonald has no plans to press on to the Victoria Derby.
"He's not nominated," Macdonald said.
"I'd rather see him in the (ATC) Derby in the autumn."
The owners of Gamblin' Guru have the option of paying an $82,500 late entry fee for the $1.5 million Victoria Derby (2500m) on Saturday week but Macdonald said he would like to see the three-year-old head for a spell and get the chance at Derby success next preparation.
"I'll talk to the owners but I think he'll probably be going to the paddock," Macdonald said.
"I don't know whether we really need him there at a mile and a half at this stage of his life."
Jockey Steven Arnold let Gamblin' Guru ($3) stroll to the front early in the 2200m race against four rivals and the son of New Approach was never headed as he defeated favourite Tupac Amaru ($2.70) by a neck with eight lengths to third-placed Throw The King ($12).
Gamblin' Guru rolled along out in front by about three lengths during the first part of the race before relaxing and then kicking again approaching the home turn.
Despite the runner-up closing late in the heavy ground, Gamblin' Guru held on to score his second win at his eighth start.
"I think in the autumn he'll be a much stronger and better horse," Macdonald said.
Trainer Peter Snowden, who has Complacent and San Diego heading to the Derby, said Tupac Amaru would take his place in the race.
"He may lack class but he'll stay all day," Snowden said of Tupac Amaru.
