John Singleton will look to cover his Melbourne Cup bet on Dear Demi by getting Ironstein into the field via the Lexus Stakes on Saturday.
The flamboyant businessman has backed Dear Demi to win upwards of $3 million in the Cup and could have two runners with the winner of the Lexus (2500m) guaranteed a start.
With prizemoney of $125,000 from sixth to 10th in the Cup, Ironstein could help recoup costs if Dear Demi fails to make the top 10.
Ironstein narrowly missed a Cup berth two years ago and went on to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on the final day of the Flemington carnival.
He finished second in the same race last year to long time favourite for this year's Cup, the injured Puissance De Lune.
"John would like to have two runners in the Cup and this is the only way we can get in," trainer Gerald Ryan said.
"He's done really well since he's been in Melbourne. He's fit and well and is eating up so we'll give it a shot.
"If he gets in he has a light weight and who knows?".
Ironstein, to be ridden by Brenton Avdulla, has 50.5kg in the Cup and can't be re-handicapped for winning the Lexus.
He finished sixth at his most recent start in the Tattersall's Cup at Randwick which followed his fourth in the Group One Metropolitan, less than a length behind the winner Seville.
Ironstein is a $201 chance in the Cup while the Clarry Conners-trained Dear Demi is in from $41 to $26 after Singleton's betting spree last week.
The third placegetter in the Caulfield Cup, Dear Demi runs in the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on Saturday.
A gallop on Tuesday will determine whether the Ryan-trained Snitzerland gets her interrupted spring back on track in the Group Two Yellowglen Stakes (1200m).
The dual Group One runner-up had to be treated after her failure in last month's Moir Stakes when a scope revealed mucus which may have affected her performance.
"She is terrific and has recovered well," Ryan said.
"We'll decide after she gallops whether she runs on Saturday or waits for the 1000 metre sprint on Oaks day."
