Liam Birchley is counting on the will to win of Missy Longstocking to take her a long way in Saturday's Coolmore Stud Stakes as the trainer aims for his first Group One success.
Missy Longstocking has won eight of her 11 starts and Birchley believes she should almost be unbeaten.
But the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) represents the filly's biggest challenge yet, taking on the likes of Golden Rose winner Zoustar, Golden Slipper runner-up Sidestep and a number of other well-performed three-year-olds.
"Obviously it's her biggest test but she's earned her shot at something like that," Birchley said.
"Her record speaks for itself and she's probably been unlucky not to have won a few of the ones she's lost."
Missy Longstocking scored a convincing Group Three win against her own age and sex at Caulfield last start to earn her chance in the Group One sprint.
Birchley would have liked to have given her a jumpout down the straight as he said she could be a filly that stargazes in her races, but was refused permission.
He hopes it will not matter.
"I really think the straight will suit her if she can draw the right spot," he said.
"If she can draw inside and be away from the crowd she'll be a lot more relaxed, but that's not in our hands.
"She's strong at the end of her races which is what you need and she handles all conditions.
"She gets herself in the right spot and it's a matter then of whether she's good enough."
Missy Longstocking isn't the most talented horse Birchley has trained but he says her will to win is "enormous".
"She just doesn't know how to lay down," he said.
"That has won her a few races.
"She's obviously above average but she's got that terrific will to win."
Birchley has been training for around 20 years and has had Group One placings but said it would be nice if he could win one.
"Survival is success in this game," he said.
"I'm still pretty proud to be still going. Group Ones are good to have obviously, but it's just good to still be able to keep going after 20-odd years."
