David Pfieffer, the young horseman with at least one genuine Randwick chance on Saturday, is the latest Sydneysider to try his luck with a two-state training operation.
Following the lead of trainers like Chris Waller but without the fanfare, Warwick Farm-based Pfieffer has expanded his stable.
It now includes a Toowoomba stable owned by Greg Wagner, a prominent Queensland horse player who enjoyed 2011 Epsom Handicap success with Captain Sonador.
"Greg had his own private trainer up there and things weren't working so he approached myself and my bloodstock manager David Joice to take over his stable," Pfieffer said.
"We've probably had it under our care now for the past six, maybe eight weeks, and things are going well.
"There's about 30 in work up there and I think we've had about 10 runners for two winners so far."
The Toowoomba stable will eventually create options for Pfieffer horses when they reach their mark in Sydney.
"We haven't put too much work into sending horses up there yet," he said.
"Greg had about 50 horses and we have been sorting through them."
The chances of Pfieffer's Randwick runners Pendolin and Cradle Me becoming full-time members of the Queensland stable are remote, given the trainer's plans for the two mares.
Staying-bred Pendolin is a firm favourite for the Sydney City Toyota Handicap (1500m) after showing her sprinting prowess in three runs after a break.
Her recent patch of form includes a midweek win when she ran on from the back and a last-start Randwick placing where everything went right until it counted.
"She just couldn't quite get out and when she had a chance to get out she just wasn't quite going good enough," Pfieffer said.
"It was four weeks between runs and you could nearly say she should have won."
While Pfieffer is hoping Pendolin can return to middle-distance racing during next year's Sydney autumn carnival his plans for Cradle Me are more immediate.
"There are some black-type sprints for mares coming up in Brisbane which will suit her," he said.
Cradle Me resumes as a $16 chance in the Darley Bush Fire Support Handicap (1200m).
