Ironstein lines up for the third time in a Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington with trainer Gerald Ryan confident he's in at least the same form as the previous two editions.
The eight-year-old gelding won the Group Three Queen Elizabeth (2600m) two years ago and finished five lengths second to a dominant Puissance De Lune last year.
He will be one of the horses chasing a $100,000 bonus offered to the winner of the $300,000 Queen Elizabeth if they were balloted out of Tuesday's Melbourne Cup.
Ironstein, fourth in The Metropolitan earlier this campaign, was sixth in the Lexus Stakes won by Ruscello last Saturday.
"I reckon he's going equally as well as last year and probably better than the year before," Ryan said.
"He seems to have come through the run well from last Saturday.
"He hasn't done a lot during the week but he seems bright in himself."
Ironstein was a $20 chance two years ago, started $26 last year and is rated a $16 chance this time.
Bendigo Cup winner Sertorius is favourite ahead of the Bart and James Cummings-trained Precedence who missed a Melbourne Cup berth by one place.
Let's Make Adeal, second in the Lexus, is on the third line of betting.
The race will also feature La Amistad, a three-quarter sister to Makybe Diva, who has won her past two starts at the provincials and will be out to win the race Makybe Diva won in 2002 before going on to win the Melbourne Cup for the next three years.
English visitor Forgotten Voice, the Nicky Henderson-trained gelding who was first emergency for the Caulfield Cup and then failed when fifth in the Geelong Cup on a rain-affected track, will attempt to bounce back on Saturday.
"If we get a dead four or anything better it will suit the horse. We're hoping if we can get that ground then he'll be at his best tomorrow," stable representative Ryan O'Reilly said.
