Peter Snowden is convinced stable favourite Pinwheel can end the spring carnival on a high at Caulfield after spending a large part of the year recovering from injury.

The eight-year-old has been freshened for Saturday's Group Three Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1200m) and Snowden says the son of Lonhro is suited under the weight-for-age conditions.

A $1 million earner, Pinwheel injured a suspensory ligament in the CF Orr Stakes in February. He returned to the track last month with a close fourth in the Premiere Stakes, described by Snowden as "a brilliant run".

The trainer elected to start Pinwheel two weeks later but the gelding was "a little flat" in the Moonga Stakes (1400m) on the back of his first-up effort, despite being beaten less than three lengths when fifth to spring carnival star Boban.

"I looked at either this or the 1400 metre race (Sandown Stakes) but in this race he meets them at weight-for-age and I think he's a real weight-for-age horse," Snowden said.

"Off a month's freshen-up, his work has been very, very sharp and I feel he'll run very well tomorrow."

It is more than five years since Pinwheel notched the first of his 12 wins but his trainer has no doubts he still has plenty to offer in Group company.

"For mine his form is as good on the track as it was two years ago," Snowden said.

The Darren Weir-trained dual Group One winner Platelet is favourite ahead of his stablemate Lonhspresso with Pinwheel on the fourth line of betting.

Platelet was withdrawn from last week's VRC Sprint Classic due to a clerical error on her stable return regarding her location which meant she was unable to be subjected to the same security protocols as the other runners in the Group One race.
