Oaks-winning trainer seeks Sydney success

Friday 15 November 2013, 2:05pm

Fuelled by a Group One win in Melbourne during Cup week, trainer John Sargent is setting his sights on another of Australian racing's biggest carnivals.

Sargent's interest in assembling a strong team for the Sydney autumn was piqued this week by the announcement of huge prizemoney boosts for the major races.

The news travelled quickly.

The former New Zealander, who relocated his major training base to Randwick in August, still has strong links to his homeland and has already fielded calls from across the Tasman from people keen to find a horse to target Sydney's newfound riches.

Sargent's immediate focus is on Rosehill this Saturday when he saddles up Good Job Bro in the opening race.

But next week it will switch to sourcing carnival-grade stock capable of featuring in races like the Queen Elizabeth Stakes which, with its $4 million purse, is now more valuable than the Cox Plate.

"We can compete, New Zealand horses, with Australians over ground but obviously not in sprints so it's definitely sparked them up a bit and people are inquiring," Sargent said.

"I'm heading back to New Zealand next week for the Ready To Run (sale) to see if I can buy one or two there - staying types for the future big races here."

Sargent has wasted little time making his mark since establishing his Randwick operation.

Kirramosa's Wakeful Stakes-Victorian Oaks double again put his name in lights and he hopes to capitalise on it.

"I think you have to make a statement as soon as you get here," Sargent said.

"I've had some inquiries about taking shares in horses and about some horses to train so it has helped. It has been great."

Kirramosa is already in the paddock with a view to the autumn.

The Australian Oaks is her most likely aim although the $3 million Doncaster purse could tempt connections to deviate from the traditional path.

Good Job Bro has a lesser goal on Saturday in a benchmark 73 race in which he will be out to break a run of minor placings.

"He's a definite chance because he's been quite unlucky in his last couple of runs," Sargent said.

"He's worked well and should get a nice run from that soft draw."
