Scorching weather on the west coast holds no fears for trainer Danny Bougoure as he prepares Longport for the $1 million Group One Railway Stakes at Ascot.
Although the Brisbane trainer would prefer a dead track for the mare, hot weather is forecast for Perth in the days leading up to Saturday's Railway (1600m).
"A dead surface is always best for horses but whatever the weather throws up we've got to put up with and adapt as best we can," Bougoure said.
"It's probably going to be a fair bit warmer than what she's used to but hopefully she'll cope OK with it."
Longport, who was bought by a stable client for $800,000 earlier this year at Nathan Tinkler's reduction sale, earned a tilt at the Railway when she carried 57.5kg to win at Flemington on November 9.
She drops to 53.5kg in the Railway and is the early third favourite for the Railway at $7.50 behind Smokin' Joey at $4 and another Queenslander Fire Up Fifi at $6.50.
"I thought if she got 54 kilos or less she'd get in pretty well so I was pretty happy when the handicapper gave her 53.5kg," Bougoure said.
Nash Rawiller rode Longport at Flemington but the mare will be partnered in the Railway by Craig Newitt.
Longport led throughout to win at Flemington and Bougoure believes the mare's racing pattern makes her the one to beat on Saturday.
"She's got natural gate speed once she gets over 1400 metres and further and you would think the mile would suit her ideally around Ascot," he said.
"Her blood count is perfect so all indications are that she's come through the run at Flemington really well."
Bougoure will assess Longport's Railway performance before deciding if she remains in Perth for the Group One Kingston Town Stakes (1800m).
"Initially we wanted to give her three or four runs max this prep then get her ready for something in Sydney during the autumn like the Coolmore or Doncaster," he said.
Bougoure has a host of options to choose from in Sydney and Brisbane during the autumn and winter with Longport who is Group One placed twice behind Norzita.
"The number one priority at the moment is the Coolmore," Bougoure said.
"Obviously she's going to run into (Myer Classic winner) Red Tracer but it would be a nice race to use as a lead into something like the Doncaster."
Bougoure's outstanding two-year-old Oakleigh Girl, a Flemington winner on Melbourne Cup day, is back home in Brisbane and will be freshened for the $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast in January.
