Trainer Kelly Schweida is hoping the weather won't jeopardise the chances of Better Than Ready in Saturday's Keith Noud Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm.
Storms are predicted for Friday and Saturday and Schweida is concerned a wet track could make Better Than Ready's task of carrying topweight of 60.5kg even more difficult.
"Carrying 60.5kg on a dry track is one thing but having to lump that weight on a heavy track if we happened to get a couple of storms would be my biggest worry," Schweida said.
Better Than Ready's weight on Saturday is only 0.5kg below the maximum topweight under the quality handicap conditions of the Noud.
The entire carried 60.5kg to an impressive win on a dry track at Eagle Farm on November 9 at his first start since finishing last in the Stradbroke Handicap won by Linton in June.
Better Than Ready has drawn awkwardly in barrier eight in the Noud against 16 rivals in a race Schweida describes as the strongest field of sprinters that has been assembled since the winter carnival.
"We didn't frighten many out of it that's for sure ... it's a good field," he said.
"Doing the speed map there's a couple that go forward that should put a bit of speed in the race and hopefully he can settle somewhere not far off them, maybe sixth or seventh with a bit of cover."
Schweida was forced to shelve Melbourne spring carnival plans for Better Than Ready when he suffered leg and chest injuries in a trackwork mishap in September.
Better Than Ready was being aimed at Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield and Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley before Schweida altered plans for Better Than Ready to concentrate on a brief campaign in Brisbane.
Schweida confirmed the Noud will be Better Than Ready's final appearance during the spring before he is aimed at a Melbourne autumn campaign.
The Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield in February, is high on the list of options Schweida has in mind for Better Than Ready who is likely to have one lead-up run in Melbourne.
