It needed an act of patience to help Aregee McLaren made it to the racetrack.
But it took next to no time for trainer David Jolly to decide where the lightly raced six-year-old should race on Saturday.
Aregee McLaren was entered for races in Melbourne and Adelaide and Jolly settled on the City Jeep Compass Handicap (1000m) at Moonee Valley as the right option.
"He's had a couple of jump-outs at home and he's performed well in them. We expect him to run very well," Jolly said.
Bookmakers agree with Jolly's move because Aregee McLaren is the $3.80 favourite ahead of the well-supported Planet Voyage ($4.40).
A six-year-old, Aregee McLaren has been restricted to seven starts for four wins and didn't begin racing until May last year.
"He's had a few little niggling injuries over his career and he injured himself quite badly, fracturing his pelvis, as a young horse," Jolly said.
"So that ruled out his three-year-old career."
Jolly is hoping the horse's light weight with apprentice Patrick Moloney to ride will prove telling as Aregee McLaren bids to improve on a sound first-up record of two wins from three attempts.
"The light weight suits him, because there's just not a lot of him," Jolly said.
The gelding is likely have a break again after Saturday.
"I'm thinking that he'll run in this and then might have a let-up for the autumn," Jolly said.
