Caulfield trainer Robert Smerdon believes the weight conditions in the new $100,000 Magic Millions Ballarat 3YO Classic suit his filly Anatina.
While the $200,000 Magic Millions Clockwise Classic is the feature race on Ballarat Cup Day on Sunday, the three-year-old event provides another avenue for horses bought at the Magic Millions sales to show their wares.
Smerdon says Anatina, who will carry 55kg, is in great shape despite her seventh place down the Flemington straight on Melbourne Cup Day behind Bernabeu.
It's her two previous runs - a Flemington Listed win and a Caulfield Group Three placing - that have Smerdon buoyant about her Ballarat chances.
"It looks a nice race for her under the set weight conditions - with her rating she comes into the race extremely well," Smerdon said.
"Under handicapped conditions she would be meeting all these runners worse off, so she looks particularly well-placed."
Anatina, who cost $460,000, will be ridden by Ben Melham and she is the early favourite at $2.40.
Smerdon's other filly in the race, Calcatta, with Glen Boss aboard, was bought as a yearling for $40,000.
Her best effort has been an $80,000 Listed win over 1100m at Adelaide in April as a two-year-old.
She's fourth on the line of betting at $8.50.
In her last start she finished fifth of eight at Moonee Valley last Friday night.
"She's struggled a bit in her first couple of runs this time around and at Moonee Valley last week she worked hard so we will probably ride her a little bit quieter," Smerdon said.
He said the new race provided a great opportunity for horses bought at the Magic Million sales to run for top money.
"It's also great for Ballarat to have races worth this much money," he said.
