Aeronautical looking for consolation win

Monday 25 November 2013, 6:13pm

Instead of getting ready for a $2 million race in Hong Kong, Aeronautical will be racing at home for a Listed win in a $100,000 sprint at Rosehill.

A placegetter in the Newmarket Handicap earlier this year, Aeronautical was overlooked for an invitation to the Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin's International meeting on December 8.

Trainer Lionel Cohen will race him in Saturday's Starlight Stakes (1000m) as part of an abbreviated summer program before he gets ready for the autumn features.

Aeronautical's nose second to Sessions in the Group Two Shorts in September cost him the chance of an invitation.

"He needed to win the Shorts to get an invitation," Cohen said.

"And I thought he had."

Unfortunately for Cohen, the photo-finish showed a bare margin.

A trip to Melbourne for last month's Gilgai Stakes ended badly for Aeronautical who was found to have mucus in his trachea after his unplaced effort.

He has subsequently had a barrier trial and showed no signs of the problem.

While Aeronautical won't be in Hong Kong, four of Britain's contenders have arrived safely after travelling from Australia where they all performed well during the spring.

Side Glance won the Group One Mackinnon Stakes while Red Cadeaux, Mount Athos and Dandino finished second, third and fifth respectively in the Melbourne Cup.

Dandino also finished second in the Caulfield Cup.

Side Glance runs in the Hong Kong Cup (2000m), while Red Cadeaux, Mount Athos and Dandino will all run in the Hong Kong Vase (2400m).

Australia's lone competitor at the meeting, Stradbroke Handicap winner Linton, who contests the Mile, was due to leave Australia on Monday.
