Portelli hoping for a Sydney autumn Cameo

Wednesday 27 November 2013, 5:10pm

He has matched strides with stakes winner I'm All The Talk on the training track, now Cosmic Cameo will be given the chance to earn a spot beside him on Gary Portelli's autumn carnival team.

The untapped colt resumed with a strong win in Wednesday's Become An ATC Sponsor Handicap (1100m) at Canterbury, a race which appeared to be an above-average midweek assignment.

Aided by the rails draw, Cosmic Cameo enjoyed a good run behind the speed and quickly pounced on the leaders to score.

Portelli conceded his horse received all the favours in the run but said the city victory reflected the promise he had shown at home.

"He's potentially a really nice horse. I had him rated up there with I'm All The Talk when I was educating him," Portelli said.

"He was the only horse that could work with him early on. He just kept going shin sore and he was very green.

"He's a machine now.

"I think he could line up in something over the autumn if I look after him."

Cosmic Cameo's win has earned the son of boom sire Northern Meteor a shot at a Saturday race with a view to gauging his autumn credentials.

Meanwhile, apprentice Shane Arnold had a day to remember, celebrating his first city victory on the same day as his 22nd birthday.

Arnold, who is indentured to Darren Smith at Newcastle, was having just his third ride in town and took out a heat of the Rising Star Series for apprentices with his victory aboard the Tim Martin-trained Holy Delusions.

Arnold has the right pedigree to be a jockey.

His father Alan was apprenticed to Ray Guy and later rode for Pat Webster and Bruce McLachlan in a career which yielded close to 500 winners.

The youngster, who made a spectacular start to his career in Queensland where he won the 2010 Gympie Cup just four days after being granted his riding licence, is keen for more opportunities in Sydney.

"It's definitely my number one goal at the moment, to get myself known on the provincial and city circuits," he said.
