Riders, stewards clear Werribee for return

Thursday 28 November 2013, 5:01pm

The rescheduled Werribee Cup race meeting will go ahead next month after the renovated surface was given the green light by stewards and jockeys.

Werribee has been out of action for racing since a meeting in July was abandoned because its track was unsafe.

Renovations on the inside section of the track took place ahead of a planned return for the Werribee Cup on November 13, but that meeting had to be moved.

The Werribee Cup program was rescheduled for December 15 to allow the renovated section more time to consolidate.

International horses housed at Werribee's quarantine centre worked wider out on the course during the spring carnival.

Senior jockeys Chris Symons, Brad Rawiller, Steven Arnold and Michelle Payne tested the track on Thursday, galloping eight horses.

"The area where they have focused on the track is first class," Symons told Racing Victoria.

"They've added a rye grass to it which has definitely given it a bit of structure and strength, so that will only benefit the track."
