Promising country sprinter Big Money has been fast-tracked into metropolitan racing on Wednesday in a bid to capitalise on an injury-free run of form.
A winner of three races in a career limited to four starts because of unsoundness, Big Money will be one of the favourites in the Drummond Golf Handicap (1100m) at Canterbury.
After being nursed through feet issues, the four-year-old makes his city debut after posting track-record figures in a 900-metre race at Newcastle and a come-from-behind Hawkesbury win last month.
"I probably could have kept him to the provincials for another run but I want to get him down there while he's sound because you don't know how long you've got him for," Scone trainer Rodney Northam said.
Big Money broke 50 seconds for the Newcastle 900-metre scamper and the form has held up with the horse he beat into second, Love Rocks, winning a Brisbane race at his most recent start.
Northam blamed a slippery track for Big Money missing the start before his Hawkesbury win and he envisages the chestnut making the most of his rails draw at Canterbury.
"I would expect him to lead or be behind the leader and he either way he should be able to give himself a nice run," Northam said.
Big Money is the third foal and second winner for Lyn's Money, a mare Northam trained to win eight races and more than $160,000.
But his pedigree will be overshadowed at the meeting by the blood lines of Ventura, a first starter in the Congrats @ Vinery Handicap (1250m).
Ventura's sire is Lonhro and her dam is Peach, a pedigree that makes her a full-sister to the Golden Rose winner Denman as well as a close relation to top sprinter Soul.
One of two Darley first starters in the race, Ventura will make her debut after a Warwick Farm barrier trial placing.
