Getting a horse to the racetrack can sometimes seem like trying to solve a puzzle.
Cranbourne trainer Stephen Theodore is weighing up options for which race best suits his horse Don't Get Excited after nominating him for races in Melbourne and Adelaide on Saturday.
He has already put a line through the Listed Doveton Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield because the jockeys he had lined up for the ride can't make 54kg.
Theodore also faces the same problem for the City of Marion Stakes at Morphettville where the gelding has also been given 54kg.
He is leaning towards a 1200m handicap at Caulfield where Don't Get Excited will have 60kg.
But a start will depend on whether predicted rain falls over the next few days.
"The Adelaide race was always going to be our objective but because of the strength of the field we've got 54kg and I've struggled with the jockeys I had lined up who can't ride 54," Theodore said.
"It leaves me with a conundrum - do I go to Adelaide with a lack of jockeys who can ride 54 or take the soft option and go to the 1200m handicap at Caulfield?"
Theodore said Don't Get Excited loves wet tracks and with rain expected over the next few days in Melbourne, Caulfield is looking the most likely venue.
"Whichever race we decide to turn up for, he is going to be a hard horse to beat," said Theodore.
The son of Elvstroem won his first four races for Theodore when he took over training him earlier this year.
He has been given a break after finishing out of the money in races at Flemington and Caulfield.
Theodore wants to continue racing him over the festive season with plans to head for Adelaide for the Christmas Handicap.
