Capital Commander in Magic Millions test

Tuesday 3 December 2013, 3:46pm

Trainer Nick Olive is hoping in-form Capital Commander can open a new frontier to an already accomplished racing career at Randwick on Saturday.

Convinced Capital Commander has nothing more to prove as a sprinter, Olive wants to explore the possibility of the six-year-old extending her brilliance to a middle distance.

Olive's plan starts with a benchmark race on the Kensington track when Capital Commander goes beyond 1600 metres for the first time in her 38 starts.

The 1800-metre race has attracted 10 entries and with Capital Commander handicapped on 58.5kg, Olive will give 3kg-claiming apprentice Winona Costin a metropolitan opportunity to lessen the mare's burden.

It's a test that will be central to Olive's intention to set Capital Commander for next month's Magic Millions Stayers' Cup over the same distance.

Capital Commander has featured during the past two Magic Millions racedays on the Gold Coast, winning and placing in a 1300-metre feature for fillies and mares in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

But Olive is using a former stablemate as a yardstick for his confidence about Capital Commander delivering over more ground.

"She gives me the impression she is a bit like Voice Commander, another horse I had who sprinted early on in his career," Olive said.

"When we pushed him out over a bit of distance he won the Wagga Cup and a Listed race in town over two thousand (metres).

"He probably had the best form of his career over the distance in the end."

Held back from a stud career for 12 months, Capital Commander has rewarded her owners with a patch of form that Olive says is the equal to anything she has produced in 4-1/2 seasons of racing.

"That's reflected in her characteristics around the stable," he said.

"She's eating better and she looks better. Everything is a lot better about her than in previous preparations."
