Distance right for ex-Darley mare Gig

Thursday 19 December 2013, 4:30pm

Former Darley mare Gig will have her third outing for trainer Shawn Mathrick at Flemington on Saturday and he is hoping she can recoup some of her purchase price.

Mathrick bought the five-year-old for $64,000 at a recent sale even though she had major feet problems.

"We've only had her for two starts and she has some issues with her feet," Mathrick said.

"It will probably be six months before we get them right."

After making her debut for Mathrick with a fifth over 1200-metres at Moonee Valley last month, Gig finished fourth to Danestroem over the same distance at Caulfield on December 7.

Mathrick feels she is now looking for a longer trip which she will get when she steps up to 1630-metres in the Skipton Handicap at Flemington.

"She looked like she wanted more ground and I had to decide between 1400 and a mile, but the mile at Flemington came up so we went with that," he said.

Gig will face some handy opposition including last-start winner Sistine Demon, Robbie Griffith's Chile Express and the Danny O'Brien-trained Defiant Angel.

"Hopefully she'll win some of the money we paid out for her," Mathrick said.

Mathrick is more bullish about his other starter on the program, Dance For Cash in the Chanteclair Handicap (1420m).

"She's been racing in tough company the whole way through this prep," Mathrick said.

"She can go to Flemington and be competitive without a drama."

A winner at Sale three starts ago, Dance For Cash finished third to Winta Chiller at her most recent run at Caulfield earlier this month.

Mathrick says she has a short sprint and he will instruct Dwayne Dunn to hold the mare together for as long as possible before making his run.

"We don't want to hit the lead early," he said.

"She's only got a 250 metre sprint. She can get the trip but she has (been) getting to the front too soon."

Dance For Cash is a $9 chance with the Darren Weir-trained Anlon favourite at $4.60 in an open betting race.

Gig is on the fourth line of betting at $7 for her assignment with Sistine Demon holding sway in early markets at $3.20.
