A Magic Millions quinella looms large for Sydney racing's twin brothers Nathan and Tommy Berry after Unencumbered won a crucial lead-up race at Wyong on Thursday.
With Nathan in the saddle, Unencumbered ($2.60) came from the back of the field to win the $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic and is now one of the favourites to win the $2 million main event at the Gold Coast next month.
The Classic is the sales-restricted race that helped launch Tommy onto the international stage when he rode Karuta Queen to victory in 2011.
And he was cleared overnight to chase his third Magic Millions win when an appeal against a Hong Kong riding ban was reduced by 10 days, allowing him to ride Echo Gal on January 11.
Echo Gal and Unencumbered are on the second and third lines of Millions markets respectively after Bjorn Baker's colt posted a race record in beating Melbourne visitor Geromayo ($10) by a length with the favourite Sheer Style ($1.85) finishing a half length away third.
"He's pretty straightforward because he's just got a fantastic attitude and not many horses have as good an attitude as him, particularly as a colt," Baker said.
As Sheer Style and Geromayo went head and head, Unencumbered sat six lengths off the speed before Berry made his move at the 400m.
His decision to see how the race unfolded before edging forward was a winning one after Baker thought it would be a better tactic to settle closer to the speed.
"Full credit to Nathan," Baker said.
"I did say to him about 12 times you might want to be a bit closer and be on the speed but he knows what he's on and he rode him well."
As Magic Millions bookmakers wound in Unencumbered from $8 to $6.50 behind the $4.50 favourite Oakleigh Girl, Sheer Style lost her place as second favourite and she is out to $16.
Trainer Garry Frazer said he would have to think about whether Sheer Style took her place in the Millions field after the filly ruined her chances of holding off Unencumbered when she become unbalanced on the home turn.
