Darley produces another Sydney 2YO winner

Saturday 21 December 2013, 3:08pm

Debutant Kumaon has restored the equilibrium to Darley's juvenile team with victory at Rosehill.

After a run of four straight Saturday two-year-old winners in Sydney, Crown Lodge's dominance came to an end two weeks ago when Occitan finished unplaced at Randwick in a race won by leading Magic Millions contender Unencumbered.

Trainer Peter Snowden had his doubts about running Kumaon in Saturday's Golden Gift (1100m) after he drew the second widest barrier but his jockey Kerrin McEvoy talked him into a start.

Kumaon ($12) began well, and was in a good position with favourite Baumkuchen ($4.80) leading from Francesco ($6).

McEvoy wound the Lonhro colt up in the straight and he wore down Francesco who was subsequently relegated to third after a protest by Cyclone's jockey Blake Shinn against Nash Rawiller.

But the honours were with the winner who is by champion sire Lonhro out of Nanda Kot, a mare Snowden trained to wins over 1600 and 1900 metres.

"That was a big win and there are a lot of positives from it," Snowden said.

"I wasn't going to run because of the draw and was going to save him for Canterbury next week.

"But he could have drawn wide again and Kerrin thought there looked to be a lot of speed and he thought we should run."

Snowden wouldn't be drawn into the pecking order of his youngsters who are headed by Blue Diamond favourite Earthquake but the smile on his face said a lot.

"He got bumped and sometimes they can lose focus but he kept going and was strong late," he said.

"Those are good signs and I'm very happy.

"I might give him a couple of weeks in the paddock and go from there."

The minor protest was upheld after Shinn successfully argued Rawiller had shifted about 2-1/2 horses as he made his run on the outside with the margin between the pair 1-1/2 lengths.

Stewards agreed saying the shift, which stopped Shinn's momentum, had certainly cost his rival second place.

"The interference stopped me right in my tracks," Shinn said.

Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy said his panel was satisfied had the interference not happened, Cyclone would have beaten Francesco.
