Not much went right for Lucky Lucky Lucky in Brisbane during the middle of the year.
But trainer Steve Englebrecht is convinced the winter carnival campaign has served its purpose and he is hoping the horse can repay him for the second time this preparation at Randwick on Thursday.
After lugging 60.5kg to a first-up win at Kembla Grange, Lucky Lucky Lucky is one of the favourites in the Royal Randwick Handicap (1600m).
Lucky Lucky Lucky ran in Brisbane's feature distance races for three-year-olds last season, bookending his trip with a Group Three placing over 1600m and a down-the-course performance behind Hawkspur in the Queensland Derby.
"Going to Brisbane, he didn't have the best of luck," Englebrecht said.
"Not that he would have beaten Hawkspur but he should have been more competitive in a couple of races than he was."
But Lucky Lucky Lucky has returned to stable duties with the focus of a horse who seems likely to deliver on his potential.
"He's come back a lot more mature horse, a lot more switched on," Englebrecht said.
"He's a much nicer horse now, he could get a bit excitable but he's mellowed a fair bit with the trip."
While Englebrecht doubts the quality of his Kembla Grange rivals, Lucky Lucky Lucky defeated subsequent winner Perfect Weapon by more than three lengths.
"The opposition wasn't overly strong but he won very, very well," he said.
