Resuming in Thursday's Equiano Speed Yearlings Heat is the second step on a possible Caulfield Cup journey for the Chris Hyland-trained Bombalatomba.
Bombalatomba posted respectable finishes in Group One races as a three and four-year-old before a throat issue cut short his spring five-year-old campaign.
Hyland said Bombalatomba's progress from successful surgery has enabled connections to aim the son of Fast 'N' Famous at the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) in February, which offers the winner a certain Caulfield Cup start.
"The surgery has done the job and now we hope he can measure up to a race like the Mornington Cup or the Hobart and Launceston Cups," Hyland said.
Bombalatomba is a $15 chance to win first-up at Caulfield but Hyland said the gelding would need a solid pace throughout to be in the finish.
"He's finally matured and filled out so we are expecting plenty of him this time in," Hyland said. "He's a good 30 to 40 kilos heavier now so he'll probably need the run.
"If they go hard up front, he's certainly capable of a big finish."
