The Hawkes training team might not have the numbers of old but it boasts the best strike rate in Sydney racing, boosted further by another win from Mecir.
John Hawkes took the plunge to go into partnership with his sons Michael and Wayne after years with the large Woodlands operation subsequently acquired by Sheikh Mohammed's Darley.
The Hawkes' Rosehill stable accommodates 32 horses and Mecir's Rosehill victory on Saturday puts it in fifth position on the premiership table with a strike rate of 4.6.
Recent winners include Magic Millions second favourite Invisible, Messene and Mecir who won on November 30 before and unlucky second-up sixth three weeks later.
There were no tales of woe after he steamed home to take the Schweppes Handicap (1400m) by a half length from Skip Town.
"Things are going really well and we had a winner (Laohu) in Melbourne just 15 minutes ago," Michael Hawkes said.
"Mecir should be three from three this preparation.
"We had him ready six or seven weeks ago and he drew barrier 15 three times in a row.
"We eventually ran him and he won and was very unlucky last time.
"He is a horse who has had some little feet issues over the years but we manage those and he has a lot of upside."
The five-year-old has had just 14 starts, winning four with the promise of more to come.
"I think he is a horse who will get up to a mile but we won't push him too much.
"He can still go through the grades and we are happy to win Saturday races like this with him."
Hawkes said Invisible would have his final lead-up gallop at Rosehill on Tuesday ahead of a float trip to the Gold Coast on Thursday for the $2 million Magic Millions two days later.
