Trainer Liam Birchley has made gear changes to three of his horses in a bid to boost his fortunes in the feature races at the Magic Millions carnival.
Birchley has had what he describes as "rotten luck" in the Gold Coast's two richest races, the $2 million Magic Millions Classic and $1 million Magic Millions Guineas.
However, his hopes are high that can change on Saturday when he starts Ruby Soho and Sagatona in the Classic and Missy Longstocking in the Guineas.
Birchley has taken blinkers off Missy Longstocking while adding blinkers to Sagatona and winkers to Ruby Soho.
Sagatona, who was first emergency for the Classic, gained a start on Thursday following the scratching of Nordic Empire.
The filly was given a trial in blinkers at Deagon last week and produced a performance widely rated as the best of the session.
"Yes, she did go well in the blinkers. She just needs some luck from the alley," Birchley said.
Sagatona, who has drawn gate 13, is by Real Saga whose breed traditionally improve with the addition of blinkers.
Birchley believes putting winkers on Ruby Soho will also prove significant.
"She has a good alley (two) and has done well since she won at Ipswich. There are worse chances in the race," he said.
Birchley hopes the decision to remove blinkers from Missy Longstocking will help her settle better after she over-raced when a last-start third in the Vo Rogue Plate (1350m).
"I am not saying her Vo Rogue Plate run was super but it was nowhere near as bad as some are saying," Birchley said.
Missy Longstocking was a one-time favourite for the Guineas but has drifted to $14 due to doubts about her handling the 1400-metre trip.
Meanwhile, trainer Mick Price has announced Nordic Empire will spell after tearing a muscle in his near hind leg.
"He will have box rest for two weeks and then go for a spell. You should see a nice horse later this year," Price said.
The withdrawal of Nordic Empire leaves Geromayo as Price's only runner in the Magic Millions Classic.
Sydney colt Unencumbered remained favourite for the Classic on Thursday at $3.50 ahead of Invisible at $4.50.
