Streama steps up another gear

Sunday 26 January 2014, 5:19pm

A decision on whether Streama kicks off her next campaign in Sydney or Melbourne will be made after the mare runs in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm.

Trainer Guy Walter will keep the mare to Group One weight-for-age races in the lead-up to the Doncaster on April 12 and one option is to start the campaign in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 15.

Streama had three starts in the spring, winning her third Group One race in the George Main Stakes second-up before being beaten a nose by Boban in the Epsom Handicap.

"We will wait and see how she goes in the trial on Tuesday before we decide on the Lightning," Walter said.

"I'm happy with how she has come back and she is pretty forward.

"I want to keep her at weight-for-age until the Doncaster and then she will go to either the Queen Of The Turf or the Queen Elizabeth Stakes the following week.

"She won't go to the Coolmore Classic but Appearance will be aimed at that race."

Appearance, the winner of last year's Coolmore Classic and Queen Of The Turf, was given a soft barrier trial last week and is likely to have another hit-out before she resumes in the Group Two Expressway Stakes on February 8.

Group Two winner Toydini will run in the same 800m barrier trial as Streama with the pair likely to clash in the Canterbury Stakes on on March 15.

"They will have to run against each other on the way to the Doncaster unfortunately," Walter said.

Toydini finished a close third behind Boban and Streama in his first Group One start, the Epsom Handicap, before going to Melbourne to win the Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley.

Stablemate Zanbagh is also well into her Australian Oaks preparation and will follow a traditional path to the Group One classic.

Walter has won the Oaks three times with Streama (2012), Republic Lass (2002) and Zanbagh's dam Wild Iris (2004).

Zanbagh, who races in the Tait family's famous red and white colours, was a close second in the VRC Oaks to Kirramosa who is sidelined with injury.

"Zanbagh will start off in the Light Fingers Stakes next month then go to the Surround, the Keith Nolan and the Group One Vinery before the Oaks," Walter said.
