Stars to step out at Cranbourne trials

Victoria Derby winner Polanski will be among the stars on show in barrier trials at Cranbourne this week.

The three-year-old will be making his first public appearance on Thursday since his Derby win in preparation for his return on February 8.

Trainer Robbie Laing said the Group One weight-for-age Orr Stakes at Caulfield was the likely target with the other option the Group Two Autumn Stakes against his own age on the same Caulfield program.

"I think the owners are keen to run him in the Orr and see where we are at," Laing said.

"He'll trial on Thursday at Cranbourne.

"It will be a nice, solid 800 metre trial. Then he'll do a bit of pacework the following Tuesday and Thursday and go to the races a little bit fresh but pretty right."

Cox Plate-winner Shamus Award, who had a jumpout at Flemington on Friday, is also likely to take on the older horses in the Orr which was won by star three-year-old All Too Hard last year.

The trial session will also feature leading Blue Diamond contender Earthquake who arrived in Melbourne a week ago to prepare for her return in the Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude on February 8.

Earthquake was deposed as favourite for the Blue Diamond by the Gerald Ryan-trained Rubick who scored an impressive debut win at Randwick on Saturday.

They are both due to appear at Caulfield in two weeks in the respective Preludes ahead of the Group One Blue Diamond on February 22.

Earthquake galloped at Flemington on Saturday and trainer Peter Snowden said he was delighted with how the filly had settled into Melbourne.

"I'm rapt with the way she looks. She'll trial on Thursday and I'll give her a nice click-up," he said.

Snowden already has Earthquake and Diamond Preview winner Mohave on target for the Blue Diamond and hopes Exceed and Excel colt Oruju can also measure up.

Orujo was fifth as favourite on debut in a 1000m race at Caulfield behind Nordic Empire on November 30.

"He's a nice horse. You didn't see him at his best (in his first start), he did a lot of things wrong that day," Snowden said.

Orujo will also trial on Thursday and is scheduled take on Rubick in the Blue Diamond Prelude for colts and geldings.

Group One winning sprinter Bel Esprit is another being taken to Cranbourne on Thursday.
