Stephen Baster has already won on a couple of Blue Diamond contenders this season and would not be surprised if another emerges at Caulfield on Saturday.

Baster partners the David Hayes-trained Zululand in the Group Three Chairman's Stakes (1100m), a colt the jockey rode to a debut second at the same track in late November.

Zululand, a $1.5 million yearling purchase, is on trial for a start in the Group One Blue Diamond on February 22 and Baster believes the son of Fastnet Rock has a bright future.

Baster has already won on the Mark Kavanagh-trained Chivalry at Moonee Valley last month, and has ridden Eloping to two wins from two starts including last Saturday's Blue Diamond fillies Preview.

He said he wouldn't be surprised if Zululand emerged as a Blue Diamond prospect on Saturday.

"He's definitely a nice horse," Baster said.

"He could come out on the weekend a run really well."

Baster said he had not confirmed a Blue Diamond ride yet and knows with two-year-olds things can change quickly.

"There's still a few Blue Diamond Preludes and things coming up. It depends on how everything goes between now and then," he said.

"They are not sure what they are going to do with Eloping yet, whether they give her another run or go straight to the Diamond.

"There's still a bit of water to go under the bridge before then."

Hayes has 13 juveniles still among the 65 horses paid up for the Blue Diamond on February 22 at the third declaration stage, with Zululand and stablemate Tashbeeh getting the chance to press their claims on Saturday.

Baster hasn't ridden Zululand, formerly known as Zulu Land, since his 1-3/4-length second to Nordic Empire on debut and is looking forward to seeing how much improvement he has made.

"He was probably a touch unlucky on debut," Baster said.

"He got back, there was a bit of interference up front and he got held up a little bit around the 600 metre mark. So he did a really good job to run on for second.

"I think with natural improvement he should be a nice horse on the way up."

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Nayeli is favourite for the Chairman's Stakes on the back of her debut win at Randwick earlier this month where she beat subsequent Inglis Classic winner Peggy Jean.
