Brisbane Jan 31 AAP - Respected NSW stipe Sam Woolaston has been named the new senior steward in north Queensland.

Woolaston, who will be based in Townsville, has extensive experience in NSW country and Sydney areas.

He has been deputy chairman of stewards in the Central and Western Districts and Northern Rivers District of NSW.

Woolaston has been on the Sydney metropolitan stewards panel based in Newcastle, for the past three years.

Racing Queensland CEO Darren Condon said Woolaston was ideal for the north Queensland job.

"Sam has success in senior stewards roles in Tamworth and more recently as the steward in charge at Newcastle, which is one of Australia's largest provincial racing centres," he said.

Meanwhile, applications for the position as Queensland's chief steward have closed and decision is expected on a successful candidate within weeks.
