Fiorente Melbourne bound after trial

Friday 31 January 2014, 3:36pm

Fiorente is set to add more star power to Blue Diamond Stakes day at Caulfield with the Melbourne Cup winner slated to make his return in one of two weight-for-age features on February 22.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Fiorente stepped out in a 1300m barrier trial at Randwick on Friday and pleased connections, running on from back in the field to finish a length second to stablemate Glencadam Gold.

Stable representative Mark Newnham said Fiorente was set for a trip to Melbourne to begin his autumn campaign.

"He'll probably head to Melbourne and kick off on the 22nd (of February) in either the Futurity or Peter Young Stakes," Newnham said.

Both races are weight-for-age events with the Group One Futurity over 1400m and the Group Two Peter Young over 1800m.

The Futurity Stakes is one of three Group Ones at Caulfield on February 22 along with the Blue Diamond and the Oakleigh Plate.

Fiorente has had a couple of exhibition gallops in recent weeks in Sydney and Newnham was impressed with the six-year-old's trial hit-out.

"He trialled super. He got back and hit the line strongly. Gai was very happy," he said.
