Winona Costin rides five winners

Sunday 2 February 2014, 6:12pm

Apprentice Winona Costin has had a big day out with five winners at the Sapphire Coast meeting including the Bega Town Plate, one of two features on the program.

Costin, who is indentured to Mick Tubman at Kembla Grange, says she hopes to make the move to Sydney later this year.

Three of her winners on Sunday were for another Kembla Grange trainer, Donna Grisedale, who saddled up five winners over the two-day meeting.

"I'm looking to move to Sydney after Easter," Costin told Sky Racing after winning the Town Plate on the John Marzol-trained Grey Drama.

"I'd never ridden him before but I just let him roll and he gave a good kick in the straight."

Costin's other winners were the Grisedale trio - De Licious Bobbie, Know How and Frankenbeans - and McGovern for Queanbeyan trainer Tom Wilson.

She missed out on the main event, the Bega Cup (1600m), when third on Quichang with the Mike Petrovic-trained Laurie's Love the winner for apprentice Jason Devrimol.

Petrovic said he would now give Laurie's Love his chance in the Listed Canberra Cup on March 9.

"I think he's going to the Canberra Cup now," he said.

"He's a young horse who did a lot of things wrong last time but I think he's ready to step up to the 2000 metres.

"And the kid (Jason) is also going really well."

Grisedale said she had enjoyed the carnival and was particularly pleased with Frankenbeans' 1600m win.

"He is a horse who has been looking for a distance," she said.

"I thought he was a 1000 metre horse at the beginning.

"He is a lazy laid-back animal and it takes a strong rider to get the best from him.

"We planned on leading but he doesn't have that early speed."

Costing claims three kilograms in the metropolitan and provincial areas and her riding weight is listed at 47kg.
